Just writing a good ebook is hard enough.
You must find a way to put together content that engages your audience, enhances your authority, attracts new people to your email list, or even convinces people to buy.
Yet, that often seems like the easy part compared to what comes next: designing your ebook.
If you’re like most of our clients here at Magnnetic, then the most frustrating part of creating an ebook is making sure it looks professional and polished.
While we usually handle the ebook design for our clients, we appreciate that not everybody is able to invest in professional design and branding for their ebooks. So, we’ve created this simple tutorial showing you how to create an ebook in Canva by leveraging their large library of templates.
The steps in this article are the best method we’ve found when it comes to how to make an ebook on Canva.
The problem we see with most guides that show you how to create an ebook on Canva is that they rely on having you do some portions entirely from scratch.
This is generally a bad idea.
Since people who use Canva to create an ebook are usually not designers, having them do things from scratch is an easy way to end up with an ebook that looks amateurish.
And an ugly ebook is a waste of all your hard work.
Believe it or not, a product’s design is an important part of product psychology.
Thanks to the psychological biases known as the Halo Effect and the Horn Effect, design affects the perceived value of your product. And bad design not only taints your product, it tarnishes your entire brand.
It makes people think: “if this product is of such low quality, then other things from this person/company must be of similar quality.”
That’s not what we want for you.
So, in our guide for creating an ebook in Canva, we’ll show you how to rely on Canva’s ready-made templates to create your ebook. These done-for-you templates are already polished, allowing you to create a nice-looking ebook with little effort and at no cost.
So, let’s get started with how to make an ebook on Canva:
This tutorial on how to create an ebook on Canva will be broken down into six simple steps. Each step will be accompanied by short videos that demonstrate exactly what we’re talking about.
Any good ebook needs a good cover. So, the first template you need to find is for your cover. The best ebook covers tend to be in the “book covers,” “proposals”, or “reports” template categories.
Our personal favorite is the reports category.
To find it, simply login to Canva and type “report” in the search bar on the homepage. Then, select your template of choice:
The next step in creating an ebook in Canva is selecting a combination of colors and fonts that are appropriate for your brand.
You can select these yourself, but again, it’s safer and easier to stick with Canva’s premade options. To choose from the premade color and font combos, select “More” at the bottom of the left-hand navigation menu and choose the “Styles” tab. Then, select from the available color and font combos:
Next, we’ll need to find a template for a table of contents to use in your ebook.
However, the free version of Canva doesn’t allow you to save and import templates into existing projects. So, we use a neat little trick to get around this. You’ll need to:
Note: remember to apply your colors and fonts from Step 2 to every new page you create:
Next, we’ll need to create the pages for the body of our ebook. There are three ways to find different page templates. Feel free to mix and match the below methods to find the pages that work best for you.
The starter template you chose in Step 1 may come with one or more template pages you can use:
The “templates” tab in the left-hand menu allows you pull up other templates within the same category as your starter template. In this case, we can see other templates in the “reports” category:
To use pages from templates in any category, we’ll use the same trick we used in Step 3. We’ll open Canva in another tab and find a template we like, then copy/paste the page template into our existing project.
In the following example video, we copy/paste a page from a template in the “proposal” category:
Now that you’ve got a cover, table of contents, and a body, you’ve taken care of most of the work in learning how to create an ebook in Canva!
This step is just customizing the pages with your content and applying your color and font choice from Step 2 to all your new pages.
The final step is to download your new ebook as a PDF. Canva makes it easy as can be:
It’s safe to say that Canva has made everybody’s life easier with it’s buttery smooth UI and huge library of templates. The company has done a great job making it easy to create an ebook in Canva.
But as with any software that appeals to the masses by simplifying something complicated, it has its shortcomings.
Canva excels at simplifying design, but it’s not built with the functionality of a word processor in mind. So, arranging and formatting the paragraphs for each page of your ebook can be a frustrating experience. And the more content you have, the more frustrating this experience will be.
That’s why Canva truly shines when creating flyers, blog graphics, ad images, and other short-form content.
But for long-form content, like most ebooks, Canva can be a struggle.
You’re also limited by the templates and what Canva’s editor allows you to do, making it hard to create unique design that’s tailored for your brand.
These issues combined can make it difficult to create the kind of professional ebook you need to represent your brand.
So, it might be a good idea to consider an ebook design service.
If that’s not an option for you, then you can certainly make Canva work by using the steps in this article. Then, as your business grows, you can invest in the kind of professional ebook design that established brands use.
Regardless, you should now have all you need to take on the world with your next ebook!
